Chiropractic in Brazil

The first undergraduate chiropractic course in Brazil and Latin America started in 2000, at FEEVALE, in Novo Hamburgo–RS.

The World Health Organization (WHO) mentions in its publication “Legal Status of Traditional Medicine and Complementary/Alternative Medicine: A worldwide review” 2001) the development of Chiropractic in Brazil and describes the presence of a 10 semester long undergraduate course authorized by the “Portaria n° 20/99 – CONSU”, in 29/09/99 at FEEVALE. Its first class graduated in 2004.
The profession was recognized by the World Health Organization who released Guidelines on Basic Training and Safety in Chiropractic in 2005.

In Brazil, the profession has already been recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture (portaria n°902/2006 in Rio Grande do Sul at FEEVALE and portaria n° 903/2006 in São Paulo at Universidade Anhembi Morumbi). Chiropractic is represented in Brazil by the Brazilian Chiropractic Association, (ABQ, Associação Brasileira de Quiropraxia), which is part of the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), closely linked to the World Health Organization (WHO). The activity is included in the Brazilian Code of Occupations from the Ministry of Labor.



Chiropractic in the world:

Chiropractic is structured as an independent health profession in 89 countries. Due to relevant advantages in relation to cost/benefit, part of developed countries has chiropractic incorporated to their public service and health care insurance companies. The profession is among the three most sought after within the primary care field, along with Medicine and
Dentistry. Chiropractic management offers benefits such as the decrease in costs with hospital stay, medication, surgery and absence from work, as well as a rapid return to regular activities and the advances in the health care field in general.
